This year's Invitational at Crow Wood Golf Club on Saturday 6th August will support the Seve Ballesteros Foundation in aid of Cancer Research UK. The ambition is to raise significant funds for research into brain cancer.

 

Seve Ballesteros was, for a decade, arguably the greatest golfer on the planet. A man with movie star looks and rock star charisma. A sporting icon, he carried European golf out of the shadow of the billion dollar US tour. Quite simply he is the most popular player ever to hit a golf ball on this side of the Atlantic. Like few before or since, Seve transcended his sport.

 

He was the man who made golfers everywhere believe; to believe anything was possible – from the trees, the bushes, the rough and even a car park! Seve made doing it the hard way look breathtakingly easy.

 

Seve was the first European – and the youngest – Masters champion in 1980 and almost single handedly saved the Ryder Cup. At his best, he was unbeatable, he knew it and so did the rest of the world! Seve retired from professional golf in July 2007, aged 50.

 

In October 2008, Seve Ballesteros collapsed at Madrid Airport. He was later diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent life saving brain surgery at La Paz hospital in Madrid. "This is the toughest match of my life," he said. The courage and determination he had shown for 30 years on the golf course now helped him in his greatest challenge. "You must always fight, never give up."

 

Seve Ballesteros Foundation, with our help, is on course to beat brain cancer. Around 298,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year; this equates to around 489 out of 100,000 people.
