Our father Dermot, diagnosed a year or so ago with Alzheimer's, is an exceptional man who has accomplished many things in his life.  He's dad to the six of us and endlessly proud of all of us. He has been, and continues to be a hard act to follow, as an exemplary student /doctor (bit of a genius), Surgeon Commodore in the British navy travelling the world in submarines and ships, among countless other things.  He is an incredible story teller, having seen so much and had so many adventures.  We groaned on occasion when listening to the same story for the umpteenth time at the dinner table, but he always had, and will have a captive audience in us, and having been on the debates team and a requested speaker at lots of events, he was well able to tell a good tale.

He has gone from being a vibrant, fun-loving man to someone who can no longer do up the zip on a jacket or be left on his own. Ths disease is so much more than memory loss, and is extremely hard on the carers (in this case, our mum). We all dread the day when he no longer knows who we are.

We've all had very different relationships with Dad, but each of us wants to give something back to him, in some small way, now that he is sadly suffering from Alzheimer's and we are losing him bit by bit.
