Story
A joint venture to raise money by the DIrectors of the InFoMM CDT at Oxford Mathematical Institute.
Education East Africa is a small charity promoting education in rural Tanzania that has done great work for twenty one years (they started as the Village Education Project Kilimanjaro). Colin's daughter (Helen currently at Harris Manchester) and her friend worked for the charity for 8 months as English teachers in the small local village school of 'Mshiri' in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The classrooms were basic, had 62 children, with only a whiteboard, and desks which 3 students had to squeeze on! All the books, pens and teaching material were provided by the charity. In this region being able to speak English is a ticket to secondary school, offering the prospect of better jobs and security for their families. The charity is now doing even bigger work, striving to change English education at a national level in both Tanzania and Rwanda. I'm doing something silly to help support the work that helps get people on the education stepladder.
