Story

In October 2009 Corporal Andy Reid MBE was blown up by an improvised explosive device whilst on patrol in Helmand Province in Afghanistan.  He sustained severe injuries, losing both legs, one below the knee, one above and his right arm above the elbow.

My role in Andy's recovery was as his physiotherapist at DMRC Headley Court.  Over several years of working together, Andy learnt to walk again, swim and ride his bike.  Working at Headley Court and treating Andy back in 2009 was a great honour and privilege and my experience was only boosted by his mindset that he is a survivor and not a victim. This positive attitude to life is both impressive and powerful.

Andy's next challenge is to climb 19,341 feet up Mount Kilimanjaro in October 2022. The plan is to summit on the 13th Anniversary of Andy's survival day. This is going to be a phenomenal challenge and achievement for all involved but especially for Andy as every single step will be a significant challenge.  I was asked by Andy to join him on this expedition as his physiotherapist, an opportunity of a lifetime and a huge honour.  I will be there along with the rest of the medical team treating Andy as he ascends the mountain, making sure that collectively we do everything in our power so he can summit Mount Kilimanjaro on foot.

All the funds raised will go to the The Standing Tall Foundation, a charity founded by Andy and his friend John Tabern in 2020, to support young carers, the vulnerable, Veterans, civilians and senior citizens
