Hi and thanks for taking the time to visit my page. My nephew Ashley who is just 10 years old was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Shock seems like too subtle a word to describe the feeling when you read that the condition is fatal, that his muscles will waste leaving him unable to walk in just a couple of years, followed by further muscle deterioration of his arms leaving unable to eat independently, progressing to his lungs and heart with a life expectancy of his early 20's. I can't tell you the tears I've shed and still do as I write this. Ashley is however mentally strong and his condition never seems to get him down, he battles though every challenge, some days this is just walking out of school and others its an egg and spoon race cheered on by his amazing friends. Ashley has recently become aware of his condition, on finding out his condition didn’t have a cure he responded with he didn’t want to leave his family. When a 10 year old can fight this battle daily with a positive and caring attitude he needs his Aunty to fight his corner too...or chuck herself and a few fellow teachers off a mountain on a longwire over a quarry!! So on Sunday 13th May I along with other willing volunteers who are Ashleys real life superheroes will be braving Europes longest zipwire. We will be released from a 500ft cliff edge, headfirst reaching speeds of 119mph for a mile. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible to fund research into treatments which will prolong Ashleys mobility and his life.
