Story

Please have a look at the following article, which appeared in The Herald recently:

Jon Paul Oxley, 21, from Chaddlewood, lost his battle with cystic fibrosis On Thursday 6 September 2012 following a lung infection.

Hundreds of people have left tributes to the "inspirational" young charity campaigner on social networking site Facebook following his death.

Louise Bayne, one of Jon Paul's special care nurses, wrote: "I held you in my arms as a baby. I will hold you in my heart forever.

"The time you had with us was filled with fun, love, compassion bravery and dignity far beyond your tender years. Run carefree across the footy field JP and know that we will all remember your beautiful smile forever."

Jon Paul had fought his condition for more than 20 years and had been on a waiting list for a life-saving double lung transplant for 19 months when he died.

John Didymus, headteacher at Ridgeway School, where Jon Paul had previously studied, told The Herald he would not be forgotten.

He said: "Jon Paul Oxley was, without any doubt, one of a kind, a total inspiration to us all and he will be deeply missed. Jon Paul set a standard of bravery, decency, generosity and achievement that many find hard to fit into a lifetime let alone 21 years.

"We genuinely viewed JP, as he was affectionately known, as a legend in his own lifetime. During our annual awards ceremony two years ago, his introduction to the audience of more than 600 guests including parents, staff and students, elicited by far the most sincere, rapturous and sustained response of any awards evening I can remember. He inspired people across all age groups and his memory will continue to do so.

"His generosity of spirit, cheerful outlook and smiling face will be long remembered.

"JP remains a towering example to us all and we will not forget him."

Similar sentiments have been echoed by friends on Facebook.

Kristy Marcer wrote: "You were a star who shone fast and bright in the time you were with us. You did so much good for others and will always remain an inspiration to the rest of us to do something good with the time we have.."

Jon Paul died at around 8pm at Derriford Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.

His parents said he had left a "massive, massive hole" in their lives.

Jon Paul's funeral will take place at St Mary's Church, Plympton, on Friday September 21 at 12 noon.

His family have asked that everyone wears either a Sheffield Wednesday football shirt, Jon Paul's favourite team, or blue and white. They have also asked for donations, rather than flowers, to be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and the Honeyford Ward at Derriford Hospital.
