Story
After growing up watching my Mum run marathons and solemnly vowing I would never, ever, do that. Here I am. Ran a couple of half marathons and all of a sudden think I'm a long distance runner, a tale as old as time.
If I'm going to potentially ruin my knees forever, it's worth doing it for a good reason. I'm running to fundraise for the RNLI, and for my grandpa. These two things crossover in that my grandpa very proudly had an RNLI sticker on his Honda Jazz, which was his pride and joy (outwith his grandchildren, of course).
My grandfather grew up in Edinburgh, and was incredibly fond of Portobello beach. This is where we scattered his ashes, as it felt only right he should forever be at sea. Grandpa served in the Navy during WW2 and he always spoke about his time at sea with a great fondness.
My grandpa was a kind and giving man, and he loved his family and neighbours abundantly. I know he'd be really chuffed to know I'm doing this for him.
Also, from a purely selfish perspective, I've recently taken up stand up paddleboarding. I like to think I will never end up in need of a rescue, but I doubt anyone does. Given the lifeboats are purely run on donations, I'd like to do my bit to preserve their services for those who love the water.
The RNLI do excellent work. They're the lifeboats who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland. The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands. And they rescue people who are simply seeking a safer place to live.
Thanks for stopping by, and all and any donations will be gratefully received with enthusiasm.
