Cindy's fundraiser for injured rugby players - a cause close to my heart

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My son Will, suffered a life changing injury whilst playing rugby at our local club in Kingsbridge in January 2017. Will had always loved
his sport and lived and breathed for rugby. Prior to his accident, Will had successfully taken part in the Under 15’s Devon rugby trails and subsequently paid two games with the Devon U15 squad.
In January 2017, whilst playing rugby for Kingsbridge RFC away at Paignton RFC, Will sustained a ‘stinger’ injury to his neck and he all but ruptured the nerves of his brachial plexus on his right-hand side. He spent the initial year following his injury undergoing numerous medical appointments to understand and fully diagnose his condition…. MRI, x-rays, ultrasound, months of physio etc.
Finally, we sought another opinion through the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London and it was deemed surgery was required. Will had his first bout of surgery in December
2018 which was exploratory surgery to remove the excess scar tissue around his neck/shoulder which was affecting the nerves on his right side. He then had further surgery in September 2019
moving the position of his nerve around his elbow.
Unfortunately, at this stage surgery has been limited in any affect it has had on Will’s condition. Will is now 17 years old and studying for his A levels and lives with chronic pain. He is on permanent medication to manage the pain and he takes nerve relaxants to help him sleep at
night. The condition troubles him daily at school as he struggles with writing as this only exacerbates his pain.
I have seen the impact that this nasty injury has had on Will’s teenage years and is highly likely to be ongoing and possibly with him for the rest of his life.
So, this is the reason I have chosen the RFU Injured Players Foundation as a charity I wish to support in running the Virgin Money London Marathon this year. Some rugby players may experience severe and life-changing injuries and it is these people who need the support of this charity to help in their ongoing rehabilitation and recovery, and help them adapt to a new life.
