Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

How lucky am I to be given the chance to run the Virgin Money London Marathon again next year for Diabetes UK. I completed London Marathon 2019 in 5 hours 58 minutes. The journey to the start line was emotional and amazing and emotions were high on the day as I remembered why I was running - through the loss of my Dad. I’d like to think he would have been proud of me even if he did think I was crackers for wanting to do it since 2008.

As so many of you know by now, Dad was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the early 1980's and for many years was well controlled on tablets.  However, he began to struggle with highs and lows and was started on insulin in addition to his tablets. For somebody who hated needles and used to come out in a hot sweat testing his blood glucose, I was proud that he managed to self-administer insulin with very few problems.

Towards the end of 2016 I noticed a change in Dad and was pushing to get his memory assessed.  My confident and independent Dad was changing in front of my eyes and, to cut a painful story short, he was diagnosed with vascular dementia in May 2017.  This was secondary to diabetes as he had no other risk factors.  As the dementia ravaged my Dad and took him from us, his diabetes become unmanageable as he fought with the carers who tried to give insulin and check his blood sugars.  After a furious battle he lost his fight and passed away on 12th January 2018.

Dad cared for Mum for 4 years during her own battle with vascular dementia and he became involved with Carers groups, Alzheimer's Society and Diabetes UK.  He used to attend monthly diabetes meetings and was always keen to tell me what he had learned, because he learned something every time he went.  To lose both my parents to dementia was dreadful but Dad had a good insight into his failing memory and was powerless to stop it progressing.

I am humbled to have been chosen to run for Diabetes UK again.  I have met some amazing people on Team DUK and watched their battles with Type 1 diabetes but they all went on to complete London Marathon (a lot faster than me!).

Dad supported Diabetes UK.  He read The Balance from cover to cover, trying out recipes then passing the magazine to me to take to work for our waiting room so others could benefit.  He was a kind and generous man and went out of his way to help others and he has left a massive hole in our family.

I hope that by my efforts, I can continue to raise money in his memory.  I do appreciate that money is tight but any donation is greatly appreciated to go toward Diabetes UK making this a world where diabetes can do no harm.  Its not just about 'sugar'.
