Story
Hi.
Starting on the 8th of January 2015, for pretty much the first time in my life, I am going to do something for charity, and that something I will be doing is participating in a Bike Ride from Kilimanjaro across Tanzania, a distance of over 450km, in up to 35 degree heat, in only 7 days. However to enable me to actually do that, I am relying on the generosity of the great British public - that is you.
The aim of this gruelling ride is to raise as much money as possible for the Halfords Re~Cycle Initiative.
Re~Cycle www.re-cycle.org is a UK charity committed to improving life prospects through the provision of cheap, sustainable transport in Africa.
Funds raised will help Re~Cycle provide bikes for its partner organisations in Africa like Glad's House.
Glad's House is a charity based in Mombasa in Kenya which provides a chance of food, education, and a chance of work for many of the thousands of young people who live on the streets of Mombasa, Kenya. For these children life has always been a struggle for survival, often leading to the misuse of alcohol, drugs and a life of crime. The charity aims to get as many of the children and young people back into full time education or onto apprenticeship schemes and helps to provide them with vital food and equipment.
Using the bikes provided by Re~Cycle, Glad’s House Bike Project was established as a not for profit company to repair and sell reasonably priced and good quality bicycles to the local community. Funds raised from the bike project pay for school teachers, food and sports equipment.
The project also provides cheap transport to assist young people start working for themselves. This is either for affordable transport to and from work or to assist them with their work (carrying and/or delivering).
