Story
My uncle dealt with the debilitating effects of this rare illness for 15 years. He did so with courage, grace and, impossibly, humour too. My uncle was a great man, and now I'm asking for your help to make life better for others with this condition. Whatever you are able to give will be much appreciated.
The event I am taking part in is Equinox 24: https://www.equinox24.co.uk/
It's a 24 hour, run-as-much-as-you-want format, around a 6.1 mile various-terrain loop. Yes, 24 hours, but let's not dwell too long on that! I don't have a particular goal in mind, in terms of distance. All I can promise is that I will apply myself and do my best.
About Amyloidosis
What is it?
Amyloidosis is a rare disease caused by damaging build up of abnormal protein fibres, called amyloid, within the tissues and organs.
What does it affect?
It can affect any part of the body and lead to life threatening organ failure. It causes the death of about one person in every thousand and there are about 6,000 cases in the UK at any time.
Where will the money go?
Donations to the Amyloidosis Research Fund within the Royal Free Charity supports the research, development and patients of the UK NHS National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) at the Royal Free Hospital. The Centre, established in 1999, is funded directly by NHS Specialised Services to provide diagnostic and management advisory services for all UK amyloidosis patients.
A note on Gift Aid
Gift Aid supports the Royal Free Charity's full range of vital support services for staff and patients across the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, as well as supporting research and innovation.
