We safe and decent homes for families to build new lives, hopes and opportunities

Story

I have a training contract to train as a solicitor with a national firm, Addleshaw Goddard LLP. As you may be aware I will be beginning my 2 year stint as a trainee in August and all of the trainees who will start at Addleshaw Goddard are flying to for a week on 9th August to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is a charity that works with the poorest people across the world and helps them to build and finance their own home and I am trying to raise £500 as a contribution to the charity, which all of the trainees have been asked to raise.

We will be working on a building site, doing jobs such as digging foundations, laying bricks, placing roof tiles and mixing cement, along with other labour that needs to be done (I think a nail file will definitely need to be packed!). In this way, we can reduce the amount of work needed to be done by the family in order to construct their own home.

Habitat for Humanity's mission is to eliminate substandard housing worldwide. It was founded in 1976 and now works in over 90 countries. Currently, one house is built every 10 minutes or so!

Many Romanians live in cramped housing and only half have access to piped water. Much of
's housing stock is low-quality and deteriorating because of a lack of maintenance. A family of eight is more likely to live in a two-room flat than in a home with four rooms or more. More than 10,000 blocks of apartment flats erected before 1980 need serious renovation to their infrastructure, heating systems and roofs. About the charity

We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.
