We provide free accommodation for families to keep them close to their sick child

Story

On 8th June 2022 our baby girl was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young people. She was suffering from RSV and could no longer breathe on her own. Watching our five week old baby fight for her life was the most frightening thing we've ever had to witness. As she was in intensive care parents are not permitted to sleep in the unit next to their child. We began to feel stressed about where we could stay. We didn't want to go home to Polbeth and leave our princess in Edinburgh. Money wouldn't stretch to get us a hotel. We didn't know how long she could be there. One of the incredible ITU staff told us we would qualify for a room at the Ronald McDonald house located within the hospital. We suddenly felt relief. One less thing to worry about. We could be close to our girl and be by her side in a matter of moments. We were shown to a lovely clean room with two comfortable beds. Within the charity there was a communal living area with TV and also a communal kitchen with microwaves, sinks and ovens. We also had our own specific fridge and freezer to store meals. Most importantly it had a toy room full of wonderful toys. When not sitting by Ayla's bed side, this gave us a space to spend time with Caden and have some normality. In addition, the house allowed us to connect and converse with other parents who understood exactly what we were going through. On 10th September a group of us will climb Ben Nevis to raise money for the Ronald McDonald house charity. In 2021 this charity supported 3,916 families across their 13 houses with an average stay of 16 nights. They helped to save families an average of £1,240 in out-of-pocket accommodation costs. If anyone reading this can afford to sponsor us we would be incredibly grateful. It costs £25 for one family to be accommodated in the house for one night. Meaning they have a base to be near their sick child's hospital bed. It is a crucial place for parents to relax and recuperate to be strong for their child. We spent 7 nights in the Ronald McDonald house before Ayla was discharged to the ward. It really was a 'home away from home' and reduced so much emotional and financial strain. We will be forever grateful to this amazing charity, it made the toughest week of our lives that little bit easier. This is really close to our hearts and we are thankful for any support or donations. Chloe & Adam x
