Story
I will be running the London Marathon this year in memory of my Dad, who I lost in December 2021. He was my biggest supporter and loved a challenge, so I know he will be with me throughout this journey. Four months of training and during the hottest summer on record will be difficult, but I want to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer, as early diagnosis might save someone else in the future! My Dad was able to take part in a trial drug, which combined with chemo, gave us 16 months with him after diagnosis. With more research and funding in the future I hope others get more time with their loved ones. I hope to be as strong as my Dad to complete my challenge! I also welcome cheerleaders during the event!
Cancer of the oesophagus is growing rapidly in incidence across the UK and is currently the seventh biggest cancer killer. Despite the best modern treatments, survival rates are appalling. This is partly due to diagnosis often being made when the condition is too advanced to be treated; early symptoms are few and are often ignored.
Persistent heartburn is a significant symptom of oesophageal cancer and also the pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett's oesophagus.
Do not ignore persistent heartburn. If it lasts more than 3 weeks, see your GP.
