Story

Hello, my name is Charlotte and I`ve just had my 12th birthday. When I am older I would really like to become a vet. I am currently a member of the pdsa and am trying to raise money for sick and injured pets. To try and achieve this I am aiming to cycle 300 miles with Beattie my pet dalmatian through four different locations in England, discovering animals and vet surgeries on the way.

This charity work is going to be carried out over six months in my school holiday time. My first destination is Richmond Park, London (Feb half term) looking for wild deer, then on to Thirsk (Easter hols), home of James Herriot (famous vet). Next I will go to Nidderdale (May half term) in the Yorkshire Dales to see the many farm animals there; finally on to the New Forest (summer hols) in Hampshire to meet the wild ponies.

I've been lucky enough to own lots of pets through my life including Great African land snails (and bred from them), two miniature black poodles called Mollie and Rosie and three guinea pigs "Cocoa", "Nutmeg" and " Cinnamon". At the moment I have two Albino rabbits called Poppy and Ruby.

Look out for regular updates listing what animals Beattie and I have discovered and how many miles we've achieved.

This is how your valuable donation will help...

£5 - antibiotics to treat a sick puppy

£20 - metal plate to fix a broken leg

£30 - injections to help dogs with arthritis

£100 - electric clippers to remove pets' hair before operation

£500 - x-ray table

Thank you! Charlotte & Beattie.

13th February 2012

Yesterday was a fab, cold, muddy and rainy day at Richmond Park! I had a great time seeing all the wild deer whilst cycling through all the mud and up some steep hills. I managed to cycle 20 miles & nearly froze! I look forward to doing some more cycling tomorrow & hope the sun comes out!

15th February 2012

Today was a very good day for cycling. It was dry and sunny. I managed to cycle another 30 miles so making a grand total of 50 miles this half term! I was able to get alot closer to the deer & hope you enjoy looking at the photos of them. Thank you all very much for your donations....... I've nearly achieved my target!

In the Easter holidays I`m going to be cycling around Thirsk & visiting the James Herriot Museum before going up to Edinburgh with Mum, Dad, Hattie & Beattie to see the giant pandas at Edinburgh zoo.

On 27th February I was invited to go to Highfield Prep School to talk about my charity cycle ride. I talked to the charity committee about the PDSA and showed the children photos of my pets & where I have been cycling. They were very interested & liked the pdsa stickers I gave out!. It was really strange going back to my old school to talk to the charity committee as I was head girl of charity committee last year! I really enjoyed talking to the children & staff and will be going back to Highfield Prep on May 7th to present my pdsa charity work to the whole school assembly.

12/13th April

Visiting the James Herriot museum was great. I've been several times before but each time I visit I learn something new. This time I discovered that I have the strength to be a vet ....... I delievered a plastic calf which was hard work!!! It was fascinating seeing all the old fashioned medicines in the dispensary and how these made the animals better.

The museum in Thirsk is the actual place where James Herriot worked and lived. The BBC James Herriot series was filmed in Askrigg. After the museum visit we drove to Askrigg to have a look at Skeldale House.

The next day Beattie and I cycled 22 miles in the North York Moors. James Herriot would have covered the same miles aswell because several of the farms here were in his practice area.

15-18th April- Edinburgh Zoo

I was lucky enough to see Tian Tian and Yang Guang the two Giant Pandas on loan to the zoo from the Chinese Government. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (who own the zoo) are part of the international programme to breed giant pandas. There is so much still to learn about their habitat and behaviour, so this programme is hoping to answer some of the questions.

Having seen the pandas I got to see; the big cats, rhinos, koalas, monkeys, penguins, chimpanzees and lots more!!!

Unfortunely, Beattie wasn't allowed in the zoo so spent the day with Molly, with my relative's chocolate lab.

The cycling in Edinburgh was cold! Mum, Dad, Hattie, Alex and Beattie all joined me on a 30 mile bike ride which took me up to 100 miles.

8/9th June 2012

This weekend Beattie, Dad and I headed up into the North York Moors with bikes and a 3 man tent! The weather once again wasn`t brilliant but we still enjoyed the cycle in the rain and wind. Luckily there were lots of tearooms along the way!

In Dalby Forest we saw a rescue Shetland pony, called Alfie he was going for a walk on a lead! He was the same size as Beattie.

Camping was fun, if a little cold! It was Beattie`s first time sleeping in the bedroom compartment of the tent!
