Some words from Mum...

In February 2020, at the age of 61, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, after a time of complete disbelief and googling (which I wouldn't recommend - it was depressing and frightening) I felt bewildered. It took 6 months to feel able to tell people outside family and close friends, I felt embarrassed and ashamed.

That was then, now I see it as an adventure and I’m going to get as much fun out of it as I can, I refuse to feel sorry for myself. It’s a roller coaster, that I have been put on and as I’ve never wanted to try one in the first place it’s an odd way to do it!

On 1st August 2021, James, Charlotte, Peter and I walked up the final assent of Penhill in Wensleydale. My feet aren't good in the first place so it was a challenge anyway. From that, I announced that we would do it on the nearest Sunday to Yorkshire Day for as long as I could manage it. That thought has evolved into a Parkinson’s Penhill Prosecco Party, a walk up the final assent of Penhill, to raise some funds, a glass and a smile.

The funds raised will go towards establishing the Parkinson’s Centre at University of Kent which will offer evidenced non-invasive therapies, wellness resources, wrap-around care and research under one roof.

The Centre will also provide comprehensive support to those that need it most, while developing new treatments that could give extra hope to so many worldwide. Parkinson's Care and Support UK is the only UK charity that focuses on integrative and holistic healthcare, wellness and care to improve the lives of people affected by Parkinson's so that they can live better for longer. All of the services are free and include specialist exercise, home-base neurological physiotherapy, respite care, mental health therapies. Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and there is no cure.
