Story
In April I will be taking on a 4 day trek across the Sahara Desert covering over 50km. I will be battling 35 degree heat during the day while we trek and at night we will be camping at temperature that can drop to 0 degrees. Many of you that know me will know that I am terrified of the dark (apparently there are no street lights in the desert!), I hate doing things by myself (I couldn’t convince any friends or family to be crazy enough to come with me!) and am very scared of the snakes (I hear there are some of them in the desert too!). So, you will know that this will be a HUGE challenge for me, and one which I wouldn’t do if it wasn’t for a very good reason. That reason has also touched the 16 other people who are all doing this challenge to support the same extraordinary charity, Martlets.
Martlets is the hospice that looks after those who are
terminally ill in the city I live in, Brighton and Hove and is also the
incredible place where I am proud to work.
My day job is helping to raise funds for the Hospice but I
am rarely able to actually take part in the events myself as I am normally donning a fetching hi-vis and walkie-talkie combo. So, I am really pleased that I have this opportunity to raise money personally for a cause that is so close to my life and my heart.
I have met so many incredibly brave and inspiring people, both patients and their loved ones since working in hospices. I know that any money raised will go towards supporting people like them, who are going through some of the toughest times we can imagine and ensure that they are not alone. I know that none of us like to talk about death but I am grateful that we live in a place where there is a hospice that would look after our loved ones, or ourselves, if our worst nightmare was to happen with compassion and kindness. And I think that is something that deserves our support.
Thank you for anything you can donate – you are all superstars! And just think of me peeing, in a hole in the sand in the desert if you need any more convincing! Lord, help me!
