Story
Welcome to my Just Giving page! I am running the 2024 Run Bournemouth Supersonic 10K for Burning Nights CRPS Support.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating chronic condition that affects approximately 290 people every week. It affects the limbs and causes severe pain, swelling, loss of movement, changes in temperature and severe sensitivity to the skin. Burning Nights CRPS Support raises awareness and supports anyone affected by this condition.
One of those people affected is my Girlfriend Elissa. She was diagnosed with CRPS in October 2011.
Below are a few words from Elissa talking about her struggles with CRPS.
Elissa's Story:
When I was 11 years old I became very poorly very quickly, my legs were crippled with burning pain and it completely turned mine and my family’s world upside down. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t touch my legs due to hypersensitivity, I couldn’t do anything for myself anymore. My mom and sister became my full time carers which took a massive toll on them. They had to dress me, get me out of bed, help me off the toilet, spend sleepless nights with me in pain, it took over their life just as much as mine! It took an extremely long 6 months to get diagnosed with CRPS I had daily trips to various doctors and hospitals due to a lack of awareness, nobody knew what was causing my pain. Once I did get diagnosed I spent 12 months at the Children’s hospital completing a rehabilitation program doing physio therapy, occupational therapy and psychology. This taught me how to walk again, how to manage my pain and emotionally support me through the difficult process. School and my teenage years were extremely difficult as I spent most of my time at home or at hospital appointments/treatments. I am now 24 and it has taken me years to learn how to live with my pain, which still very much rules my life, however I’ve managed to build a support system which enables me to run my own business and make amazing memories with my boyfriend and my family! Some days/weeks are still extremely difficult for me and those closest to me. I’m currently trialling a new pain medication and going back to physio therapy to help with my flares as there is no current cure for CRPS.
Our goal is to raise a minimum of £250 for Burning Nights. We want to bring as much awareness to this cruel chronic pain disorder and help Burning Nights in their mission of supporting those affected. So please, donate if you can!
