Fundraising for Cancer Research UK
Story
On the 21st of September I will begin a 600 mile cycle from the top of Italy, north east of Milan, up through the flat lands to the Alps, across some crazy Tour de France 2000 meter climb before settling into a further 300 miles of French road, completing the epic trip by the 2nd October.
I am attempting this with my friend Nadav, and Markham, who is traveling from the states to make the journey.The last time I rode a bike was for charity, completing the London to Brighton ride on a tandem. Our training consisted of 20 minutes, the night before the ride, around Regents Park. Little did I know I would have to push a 6 foot 4 inch, 16 1/2 stone lump for the entire 60 miles.
That same 6 foot 4 inch, but now 14 stone lump, has persuaded me to take part on this Italian journey, on the condition this affair will be on single seaters. The journey will include the heart stopping Mont Ventoux among other great climbs. In all, including the intended 600 miles of the journey, I will have cycled over 2000 miles by the time we finish. I am now a self confessed ‘MAMIL’*, my children have stopped inviting friends around, as the pink lycra is more than they can tolerate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4opCEnvLs4&feature=related I am doing this ride for the experience, for me and my waistline. That said I would like to use the experience to raise some money for two charities, Cancer Research and The Evelina Children’s Hospital in South London.
The start of 2010 saw to many friends having to deal with the consequences of being diagnosed with cancer, the waiting for the results and the eventual treatment. This was hard to bare for them and their families. In years to come many more of us will have to deal with the same trauma and pain. Cancer research will be one of the organizations that we will turn to.
The Evelina Children’s Hospital saves the lives of many children including that of another friend of mine, it was because of him and his child that Nadav and I did our tandem ride. What these doctors and nurses do is not far short of a miracle but they need all the help they can get.
