Story

Diolch am ymweld â fy nhudalen JustGiving, darllenwch yr isod i wybod mwy am fy sialens / Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, read on to find out more about my challenge.

This summer I will take on the Haute Route cycling challenge in ‘one of the highest and toughest cyclosportives in the world'. The Haute Route is a seven-day road race, timed and ranked, across Europe’s iconic cols - mountain passes to you and me :-).  I will be cycling 855km and climbing 22150metres in seven days - equivalent to three times the height of Snowdon daily – this will be a MASSIVE challenge for me.

I’m doing this as I work for the RSPB and have been inspired to raise money for one of our international projects – the Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone.

This year marks 25 years of the RSPB’s involvement with this project and protection of the Gola Rainforest. And since 2010 RSPB Cymru has been working with Size of Wales - an environmental charity hoping to unite communities, businesses, organisations and schools throughout Wales - to help protect two million hectares of rainforest around the world as a national response to climate change.

To date, our partnership with Size of Wales has contributed nearly £70,000 to the conservation of the Gola Rainforest, in West Africa. This has also been doubled by Size of Wales’ match fund, meaning twice the impact. The culmination of over 20 years work in Sierra Leone, the National Park helps to conserve over 330 bird species, 14 of which are threatened. The habitat houses birds such as the white-necked picathartes and Gola malimbe. It is also a remaining stronghold of pygmy hippopotamus and chimpanzees.

The Gola Rainforest is the most important area of forest remaining in Sierra Leone – the fifth poorest country on earth – and it is recognised as one of the world’s key ‘biodiversity hotspots’. Our work with Size of Wales hopes to ensure the area is protected in perpetuity and that the people who live around it benefit from its protection. In the absence of this work, the forest would be destroyed by a combination of conversion to agricultural land, logging and mining.

Please sponsor me to help me reach my target of £5000.00 which Size of Wales will match, so that we can raise a WHOPPING £10,000.00 for this amazingly wonderful project, and really make a difference for the wildlife and people of Sierra Leone.

Diolch yn fawr / Thank you so much
