Story
Today we finished the challenge I set myself in September to help me get through my chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer. The challenge for me was to make sure we did a section of the Ebor way (from Helmsley south to York and then west to Ilkley) each week whatever the weather and the last leg today threw the worst at us: hail, thunder, lightening.
My back story is:- I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March this year after losing weight. I thought this was due to a diet change to address pre-diabetic levels of HbA1c but when it didn't settle I knew I needed to see the GP. I had surgery in May to remove my pancreas tail and spleen and started 6 months of fortnightly chemotherapy in July.
Apart from the benefits of physical exercise, knowing that I had a walking day each week has been wonderful therapy; a day to walk with friends and feel physically and mentally great at the end of the day. Raising money for research and receiving supportive messages has also been a fantastic motivator. The updates on the stages and pictures in the gallery show the fun we had.
I'm supporting the pancreatic research charity because more research is urgently needed to identify the early stages of the disease so treatments can be effective. I'll be thinking how to extend this challenge and continue fundraising. Please share if you feel able to.
