Story
On the 13th October I will be doing something I have not done for years – and not wanted to do again if I am honest – which is to sleep out for the night. The last few times were in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. That was when I worked for CAFOD and there was no other choice. None of those experiences were good or comfortable and in fact one or two were quite frightening. So to think that I am actually choosing to sleep out is beyond surprising.
However, it will be in the iconic venue of Wembley Stadium and I am sure there will be an interesting group of fellow sleepers! And of course it’s all for an excellent cause - to raise vitally needed funds for the Cardinal Hume Centre’s work tackling poverty and homelessness. Last year over 1700 people came over our threshold looking for help, advice and support as times became tougher for them and their families. Some were sleeping rough, others were living in hostels or on someone’s floor while others were facing the risk of being evicted or moved away from their homes and communities.
While sleeping out for this one night does not compare to the reality those people are facing day in and day out, believe me it will be an act of genuine solidarity.
Please sponsor me and help send the message that homelessness and poverty should simply not exist in the modern world and certainly not in our country, the 7 richest in the world.
Thank you very much.
Cathy
