Hello - we are Catherine, Dilly,Sujata and Paddy :-) and together we are going to do the UK Trailwalker 2014.
100km. A nice round number but quite difficult to put into perspective. Have a look at these facts below to try to imagine the scale of this non-stop challenge:
- We will be walking 62.14 miles non-stop.
- Two and a half marathons back-to-back.
Trailwalker was originally started by the Queen's Gurkha Signals Regiment over 30 years ago as a training exercise to test soldiers' stamina and teamwork skills. Trailwalker is highly respected for the great determination and teamwork it demands, but will also bring a massive sense of achievement and pride to the whole team
For those of you who have sponsored so far.... a hundred thousand thank yous from us and from the charities. For those of you who have pledged and have not yet got around to it, these charities are desperately in need of your help - do it for them more than for me
By taking part in this epic challenge, we will be raising money for Oxfam, a global movement of people passionate about ending poverty. Your money will help train farmers in poorer regions to improve yields and combat hunger. It will help train teachers which will give kids a better future. It will help combat the spread of needless disease and give families struggling to come to terms with natural disaster a better chance of survival.
Money raised will also help the Gurkha Welfare Trust, which relieves poverty and distress amongst Gurkha ex-servicemen and their dependants. Money raised by Trailwalker UK in 2013 will be used to provide financial and medical aid to the most destitute Gurkhas who rely absolutely on the Trust for a dignified old age, as well as community aid projects in Gurkha villages in Nepal.
For almost 200 years, the Gurkhas have served our country and your support will help repay the debt of gratitude by supporting them and their families.
What your sponsorship money could buy:
£25 - Boost the income & improve the diet of an Ethiopian family by providing them with a sheep, or a goat. Goats provide much-needed milk to drink and sell, fertiliser for crops and kids to take to market.
£43 - Provide a month's welfare pension for a deserving old Gurkha in Nepal.
£100 - A bed for a pensioner in the Oxfam Gurkha Welfare Trust residential home.
£142 - Install a water pump and irrigation system for farmers in Rwanda.
£700 - Rebuild a Gurkha's home after it has been destroyed by flood or fire.
£3214 - A water tank. In emergencies, water tanks allow Oxfam to provide water to hundreds of families living in temporary camps.
Why are we doing this? We want to put something back in. We want to do some good and want a challenge that will test us to our limits.
What we are trying to achieve speaks for itself but we need YOUR support. We have made the commitment in time, effort and expense, but it is your financial support that will help us achieve our goals. Please do not turn a blind eye to those in need.
Please dig deep and thank you in anticipation.
