Story
Reading to Kids is a wonderful, grassroots organization that inspires underserved K-5-aged children in the LA area, many of whom are English-language learners, to develop a love for reading. Once a month, hundreds of volunteers visit elementary schools near downtown LA, read books to groups of children, and then lead fun craft activities. At the end of the session, each child receives a book to take home, and the read-aloud books are donated to the schools' libraries.
The Running for Reading to Kids team is comprised of Reading to Kids volunteers who 1) like running really far!, 2) appreciate all that Reading to Kids does for the community and 3) are hoping to raise money that will in turn be used to purchase books and help strengthen and expand the impact the organization has on the community.
I have been volunteering with Reading to Kids for almost six years and consider the 3-4 hours a month I dedicate to the organization to be some of the most rewarding and enjoyable. I find the work that Reading to Kids does to be immensely valuable, as well - teaching kids to love books, think creatively, and disconnect from technology and the deluge of content to which they (and we!) are constantly exposed.
The Reading to Kids team and I are tremendously appreciative of any contribution you can provide. Thank you!
