Fundraising for Myeloma UK
Last Saturday I tried to be one step ahead on Christmas, do my bit for Myeloma UK, and buy some Christmas cards! Instead I signed up for the chance to step off the Forth Rail Bridge into a free fall abseil and head (feet first) earthwards! Arghh and even more arghhs, I blame John as I think he pointed the finger and said "you do it".
My son Daniel has decided to keep an eye on me and has also thrown caution to the wind and will also make that backwards step into space!
I'll post the photos on Monday, I won't bother with a video as the screaming will just be annoying.
Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a type of cancer arising from plasma cells which are found in the bone marrow.
Currently, there is no known cure for myeloma but it can be effectively treated. Myeloma is a very individual cancer and therefore it can be difficult to predict with any degree of certainty how well patients will do on treatment and how long they are likely to live.
Although myeloma is treatable, it is not curable. It is a relenting and remitting cancer and, unfortunately, relapse is inevitable in almost all patients.
John was diagnosed in March 2008, he had chemo and stem cell replacement that year and went into remission.
The cancer returned in October 2011 and attacked his kidneys he died at the end of November 2011. Fortunately he knew nothing about his situation but it was a horrible shock for the rest of us. He was only 54.
