In 2016 following a long illness for my Mum I got a phone call to say she was being transported from Kingsmill to QMC as a critical patient as she had a stage 4 throat cancer, my life stopped this what what trauma feels like, no control and only hope, over a 6 week period David Grant and his amazing team saved her life through a 8 hour operation, getting Mum home was a baptism of fire with a Laryngectomy to understand and no speech but the ENT team and the SALT team were and continue to be our Angels, Around this time my Dad started suffering falls we just called him clumsy and told him to get on with it but it became clear this was not going away and following several MRI scans, memory tests and appointments with Neurology he was diagnosed in 2020 with progressive Supranuclear Palsy a no treatment no cure rapid disease, in just 3 years it has taken away his independence, with him now being under Hayward House Palliative Care team, he requires 24/7 assistance and as well as now trying to be his daughter I am one of his main carers, we aren't a family that complain we are just a family that has to deal with illness, but truth be told without this trust I wouldn't have my Mum and my Dad would be in a nursing home which is the one thing he never wants, so its time to try and give back, I hate heights I had a panic attack on the London Eye and the CN tower left me shaking with fear so with that in mind I am going over the QMC via an abseil pushing myself to my limit in the hope I can give some money back to ENT and the Hospice, I know times are tough but any support you can give will really go straight to our family and friends who use these services.
