Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Carol Salmon although some of you reading this may already know me. I have been selected by Project Trust to travel to and teach in Guyana for a year leaving in August 2010. I will be in Guyana for the entire year teaching Maths and Science to school children at either primary or high school level (the exact projects are not yet confirmed). It will be a challenging year that will test me in many different ways but it will give me the experience of living away from home and I know that by the end of my year I will have had an experience that I will never forget.
The year before I leave will also be a challange. I have already been to the Island of Coll (Where Project Trust is based) for a gruelling four day selection course. It was non-stop for the full four days with the tasks varying from teaching a 10 minute lesson (I did a Science lesson) to digging lazy beds (for those who don't know, that's where you grow potatoes, I didn't know before then!). It wasn't all hard work though, everybody made new friends and we had a great time at the end of course ceilidh (despite some questionable dancing!). After all my efforts I was very excited to recieve my acceptance letter, although I was more than a little daunted by the amount of money I have to raise. However I have already began fundraising by arranging a bag pack, holding a cake stall, selling christmas cards ( however early) and I have many other ideas that are just waiting to be set into motion.
As you may expect juggling school (2 highers, 2 advanced highers and an open university course) and fudraising will be difficult but I am positive that with your help and 100% effort on my part I can reach my total.
I chosen to volunteer with Project Trust because not only do they organise flights and insurance, which is one less thing for me to worry about, but they also offer substantial overseas support. Every year Project Trust try to send an employee to every project to make sure that the volunteers are coping with a dramatically different lifestyle. They also have desk officers for every country that are quite often returned volunteers who are always there to help. I would like to mention that Project Trust send volunteers overseas to work and my gap year is not a holiday. I will be working in a local school and Project Trust's aim is for volunteers to experience life in their country as a local not as a tourist.
If there is anything I haven't mentioned please email me at carol.salmon@live.co.uk
