Story
There are 40,000 runners taking part in the TCS London Marathon in 2022. Each runner has a reason, a motivation or a cause. I am no exception to this. This is my story…..
In August 2021 my Dad passed away, aged 83, succumbing to the big C. His final hours were spent in the loving care of the expert team at Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley, near Bath.
Dad was proper old school. If you asked him, he didn’t want or need help. He was stubborn. He was always right. The only way to do literally anything was his way. Ironically perhaps, the only song I
ever heard him sing publicly was Frank Sinatra’s – My Way. We cried and smiled at his funeral as we played this song.
Dad’s journey to the end started not with Cancer, but with Dementia. The cruel twist of the cancer came a couple of years later but quickly overtook and sealed the deal.
For my Mum, this was a very difficult time. More difficult than I think I’ll ever really know. When she did tell me things, the name of an organisation was regularly mentioned, and that was Dorothy House
Hospice. The team here had regularly offered advice, assistance and visited the house. As much as the Dorothy House team were helping
care for my increasingly ill Dad, they were also looking out for my Mum too.
For this I am eternally grateful and I want to say Thank You to Dorothy House Hospice and I’m going to do it ‘My Way’. Running the London Marathon has been on my ‘bucket list’ for some time, albeit I only started running in 2019, I recall watching in awe the runners on the telly as a young boy. Now I have the reason, the motivation and the
cause to do it.
I invite you to show your mutual appreciation of Dorothy House hospice by sponsoring me to run the 26.2 mile London Marathon in October 2022. It’s going to be an emotional day for me, I
can feel that in my bones already, and having your support for my cause will mean everything. For this, I thank you.
