Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page for the 2011 London Marathon.
Over dinner in a fine restuarant, with good friends one cold January night in 2010, I promised to run the London Marathon in 2011 for the Intercountry Adoption Centre. Two reasons. Firstly, I have wanted to run the London Marathon for a few years but had not quite got round to doing enough training in the winter months to have a go. Secondly, the IAC had helped our friends adopt a lovely little boy from India a number of years ago. He is in my sons class in school and without the IAC, this little boy would not have been given such a great future and my son would not have such a great friend.
The IAC was established in 1997 and has successfully been the only UK adoption Agency to focus exclusively on services to intercountry adopters and adults who are adopted internationally. It is a small charity which provides a unique service but unfortunately receives very little government funding. Accordingly it is in need of money to enable it to carry on its work.
Having made the commitment, I planned a year of running events to get me in shape to run the Marathon. I ran the Oxford 10k in early May, the British 10k through London mid July and was entered in the Royal Parks Half in October.
However on 25th July 2010, I had a fall and broke my wrist badly resulting in a major operation. I started running again mid November and decided that if I could run 10 miles by Christmas that I would honour my commitment. I think I was going to do it anyway but wanted to give myself a fighting chance of getting to the finish line on my two feet.
Despite the cold weather coming up to Christmas, I got enough training runs in to get the 10 miles under my belt. I had a second operation on my wrist at the end of January (6 months after breaking it) but this will not prevent me from achieving my goal. It will make running the distance that bit harder as I have missed some training runs at a crucial time and have had to adjust my schedule.
