Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We, Mary and Jack Carey, Jeff Orrell, Dean Allen, and Barry Hopper, a team of five cyclists affectionately referred to as 'Carey's Bakers', aim to cycle John O'Groats to Lands End in September. The purpose of the ride is to raise much needed funds for St Luke's Hospice at Turnchapel in Plymouth.

In 2012, St Luke's Hospice celebrates 30 years of caring for people in South Devon, East Cornwall and Plymouth with life limiting illnesses. As long time supporters of the Hospice, and because it currently costs over £6million annually to continue the work of this local charity, it was decided to raise funds for this worthy local cause.

As experienced cyclists, the initial idea was for Mary and Jack to do the challenge unsupported. Then 'surrogate son' Dean also joined their team. However, in discussions with members of the Instinctive Sports Plymouth Running Club, the group gained another two members, Jeff and Barry. We will be supported for the first week of the cycle by Rob Felwick, also from Instinctive Sports. For the second week, the support will be from Alan Burgess, a friend and neighbour of Mary and Jack. Third member of the support team is Tony Parsons, and he will be driving and navigating throughout the whole event. Everyone is raising individual sponsorship, for further donations to be made.

The 900 mile plus route will take twelve days to cycle, with a departure date from Plymouth set for Friday 7 September 2012. The actual ride will commence from John O'Groats on the morning of Sunday 9 September 2012. This means that a daily average of approximately 80 miles will need to be covered to reach Lands End on 20 September. No mean feat!

PS Carey's Bikers became 'Carey's Bakers' when an incorrect name was recorded on a telephone booking for accommodation at a Scottish Youth Hostel, and from then on, the team assumed that title for further bookings.

Also for your information, we are all quite mature individuals attempting this route, as I am 70 years young now, Mary and Jack are in their mid 60's, whilst Rob and Jeff are relatively young at 50ish, with Dean a youngster still in comparison at just 40ish!
