UK HR at Capital One have voted for Samaritan's Nottingham branch to be our charity of the year.
As a national charity, Samaritans continue to support people when they're struggling the most and at the real points of crisis in their lives, including those which may lead to suicide. Under usual circumstances, they answer a call every six seconds. During the Pandemic, calls to Samaritans have increased to the tune of 25%.
All Samaritans branches are individual charities and calls are locally routed, meaning someone from Nottinghamshire calling the line is likely to speak to someone working out of the branch on Clarendon Street in the city centre. Volunteers are working in COVID safe conditions, but continue to turn up, day in day out to provide this free service. Every call answered costs the charity around £5. Nottingham has also had to move it's training, outreach and volunteer support services online, which has increased their outgoings tremendously. Everyone working at Nottingham is a volunteer and the branch receives no funding outside of donations.
