Story
On Wednesday 31 October Euan Taylor-Reid and Brodie Couzins, both 15 year old Islington schoolboys, completed their 180-mile, 3 day bike ride from Bristol to London, raising over £1,250 for the Ben Kinsella Trust.
They were greeted at an emotional finish by Ben’s parents, George and Debbie Kinsella, and a large group of friends, family and supporters, in the Prince Edward pub on Parkhurst Road.
Debbie Kinsella said, "Brodie and Euan's sponsored bike ride is really impressive and positive. It's a great achievement by both boys and an inspiration to other youngsters. We are extremely proud of what they have done as no doubt their parents are also.”
George Kinsella added, “Whilst it was very sad for us to lose our son in the way that we did, this shows that some good has come out of it. Brodie and Euan proved that."
From the outset the boys had to overcome a series of setbacks. Heavy traffic on the motorway delayed their arrival at the start, so they were still riding in the pitch dark at 8pm – soaking wet, cold and covered in mud.
Unable to safely complete the first stage a friendly canal boat owner allowed them to leave the bikes on her boat overnight. Determined to complete the whole route the boys cycled 8 ½ hours on the second day to make up the shortfall. As they both said: “Failure is not an option.”
Strong winds on the final day couldn’t stop them completing their epic journey, arriving back in Islington at 5.30pm to a rousing reception.
Debbie and George Kinsella presented both boys with a Ben Kinsella achievement award certificate as a thank you for their dedication and time to help raise funds for the Trust.
Kathy Elson from the Ben Kinsella Trust said: “Again to both Brodie and Euan a massive thank you from everyone at The Ben Kinsella Trust on what only can be described as an amazing success.”
Brodie and Euan would like to thank everyone who has sponsored them, and the fund is still open at www.justgiving.com/brodie-euan
