My (Craig's) mother was diagnosed with terminal Pancreatic Cancer last summer and since diagnosis I have spent time researching the type of cancer, the treatments & it's charities. I'll be the first to admit that prior to my mother's diagnosis I was unaware of anything about it - I didn't even realise you could get Cancer of the Pancreas; and that's part of why we're doing this fundraiser. My mother's Cancer unfortunately was inoperable and that was with early diagnosis. The difficulty with this form of Cancer is recognising it's symptoms, it is often misdiagnosed but not necessarily because of negligence but more because of a lack of awareness and understanding. Part of the reason why such little is known about this cancer is because of it's very poor funding; out of the pool of money dedicated to Cancer charities Pancreatic Cancer receives only 1%!
It is absolutely imperative that Pancreatic Cancer is brought to vast public awareness as it's 5 year survival rate is only 3% with very little improvement on that statistic over the past 40 years. The best way to treat and possibly cure Pancreatic Cancer is with very early diagnosis. Hopefully with this fundraiser I will be able to spread this message throughout the UK to those like myself who knew little or nothing about this deadly form of Cancer.
Me and 4 of my friends (Dan, Martin, Nick & Ricky) will be travelling from Brighton (in the South) up to Berwick-upon-Tweed (by the Scottish border) using nothing but local numbered bus services; no coaches, no trains, only local numbered bus routes.
We'll be starting in Brighton on the Evening of Wednesday 23rd July and then spend 3 days working our way up through London, Milton Keynes, the Midlands, Yorkshire and then up to Berwick, ending our journey on Saturday 26th July. The journey will include 19 separate bus routes and 3 separate overnight stays in Tunbridge Wells, Nottingham & Newcastle along the way. This is a bold and unique challenge that hasn't been done before so any donations or support to help this challenge will be massively appreciated.
Thank you so much for all the support and where possible please raise awareness of this illness, the more people know the better chances of survival.
