Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We completed the 12 hour row and managed to row for 125 km continuously. This would have been equivalent to rowing from the start of the river Wear at Wearhead, past Sunderland and out into the North Sea!
26 members of staff took turns to row the distance and some were pretty exhausted by the end. The patients in the waiting room were very generous in their support of our effort.
Our secretary Adele Lavery also works at the Durham and Chester-le-Street Out of Hours centre and has pursuaded colleagues there to contribute generously. She did 5 rows through the day so she worked hard for her sponsors.
Pupils at Cestria Primary School painted a "River Wear" for us so that we could chart our progress - as demonstrated in our photos.
We will be keeping this site going till after Christmas, so please feel free to continue to donate.
St Cuthbert's Hospice has helped many of our patients and friends, particularly since they opened the inpatient unit. They are not part of the NHS, but need donations to continue with their excellent work.
This year Dr Alex Duke passed away after a relatively short illness. As the local community knows, the practice in Chester-le-Street was founded by her father, and she and her husband Dr William Duke worked at the practice for 34 years. Although they retired from Bridge End Surgery 5 years ago, Alex was still working for the PCT and the local medical community as an advisor and trainer on Child Protection issues, and a support for newly qualified GPs and any GPs or staff who may have been struggling for any number of reasons.
In memory of Alex, the staff at the surgery are all participating in a sponsored indoor row at the surgery on 11th November 2009. We will be aiming to row for 12 hours continuously from 7am to 7pm in the waiting room. Some staff have never sat on a rowing machine before and will be doing 10 minutes at a time, others may be rowing for 30 minutes or more. Hopefully we can row at least 100km in the 12 hours.
