Story
20 kilos. 45 lbs. 1 spare tyre (including wheel). 20 bags of sugar (imagine putting them in a back pack and carrying that around all day). Your luggage allowance on an Aeroplane............That is the weight I have lost.
I remember heading up to the Doctor's surgery near my house, it's maybe 500 meters away and up a hill, I wasn't in a hurry but I was blowing out my arse and was sweating fairly heavily on a not particularly hot day. I remember becoming short of breath and wondering what was wrong with me. That hurt me, I was the only one there and my pride was hurting. I know I had to find a way to change.
That change came in the form of Hibernian Community Foundation. They realised that although Football is associated to fitness, the fans certainly aren't. I was lucky enough to be selected in their Football Fans In Training (FFIT) programme. This was a revelation for me, I had found an environment where we all worked together, learning new ways of eating and of exercising but having a brilliant laugh along the way.
18 months later and I still take every opportunity to head down to Easter Road to take part in their activities. I have ran the Edinburgh half marathon last year in a record breaking time (my own record but who better to compare myself with) and have had the privilege of pulling on a Hibs top and representing them in a competitive football match (just don't ask the final scores). I've met some great guys along this journey and not all Hibs fans, I love the fact that on my course we had a St Mirren fan (my second Scottish team), as well as a couple of Villa fans on my course. Everyone was welcome.
So what now? This year is going to be a little different. On the 18th of May, we (the FITters) will be taking on our biggest challenge. We will complete three marathons in one day. The first team are doing a relay around the pitch where hopefully everyone will run at least a mile. Glen and Ricky are both running half marathons each and I will complete a , hopefully, easy 26.2 miles to make up the trio.
I have no illusions that it will be easy but I will make it. Guess my finish time and I'll pay for the closest persons donation. Cannae say any fairer than that huh?
Cheers
Brian
