Story
The DHT’s Group Head of Science, Dr Brett Cochrane, and I.T. and Media Officer, Santino Mareri, are taking on an epic “Gym Marathon” on the 4th September to help raise funds for us. They will be covering the equivalent of a full marathon distance each on 4 pieces of gym equipment: cross trainer, rowing machine, bike and treadmill. The plan is to cover 10,550 metres on each piece of gym equipment until the full 26.2 miles (42.2 km) is achieved.
Santino said: "The challenge itself is way out of my comfort zone. I thought of pulling out and leaving it up to Brett a number of times. Unfortunately, animals haven’t got a say so for one day I want to feel pressured and forced into doing something difficult I don’t want to do then maybe I can start to imagine what those animals have to go through."
Brett said: “What more can I say after Santino has so eloquently described how we feel about this self-inflicted challenge?! However, and in addition to Santino’s thoughts, I hope that this event can be used to highlight the importance of our continued drive to fund the best and most appropriate research to advance our shared cause. I also hope the state of me after completing the challenge will be a source of amusement for the whole dedicated team here at the DHT… and I’m sure I will personally be very thankful for all of the excellent non-animal heart and lung research the DHT has funded in the past!!”
