On Your Marks for Little Hearts - Shugborough 10k Run · 11 October 2009
Around 600 babies every year are born with only half a functioning heart, unfortunately our son Morgan was one of them. Only a decade ago, children like Morgan would have survived only a few days following birth. Thankfully, today there is life-saving surgery available to many. Those that do survive will never have a fully working heart, so need to learn to live with their physical restrictions and are likely to need a heart transplant in early adulthood.
Our brave little boy had his first life saving open heart surgery when he was only 12 days old, and then had a further 10 hour complex open heart procedure at the age of 1. He will undergo another major operation within the next few years. He is now 22 months old and enjoying being a lively toddler and playing with his older sister. He’s a determined little boy with lots of character, and although it’s impossible to predict what the future holds for him, we try to enjoy life to the max with him and his big sister.
Little Hearts Matter is a national charity working with families like ours where a single ventricle heart condition has been diagnosed. The charity is financed purely though its members own fundraising activities and occasional community grants.
Support is much needed, and as a result on Sunday 11th of October I will be running 10km in support of this fantastic charity. Training has commenced and although I would love to break the 1hr mark, finishing is the priority!
Thank you very much for your support. Any amount is appreciated.
