When Ariana was just two and a half years old, she was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a serious kidney condition which only affects approximately 10,000 people in the UK. There is no known cause or cure and it can be life threatening without appropriate treatment.
This means that whenever Ariana catches an infection, her immune system not only fights the infection but also 'attacks' her kidneys. This leads to her kidneys leaking protein, weakening her immune system and leaving her more vulnerable to infections becoming more serious. For example, when she caught chicken pox, Ariana had to be hospitalised for IV anti-viral treatment.
Thankfully at the moment Ariana's condition is controlled by medication but treatment is non-specific and highly toxic, with many potentially life-threatening complications and unfortunately there is currently no cure for Nephrotic Syndrome.
As well as providing a fantastic source of information about Nephrotic Syndrome, NeST is the foremost fundraising body for Nephrotic Syndrome research and we really hope that this research will one day lead to a cure.
In order to raise awareness and funds, we're participating in the 'NeST March Marathon'. Throughout March, we are all going to complete a 'Marathon'. Some of us will be walking (Shelley and Rob), some of us walking, scooting and cycling (Noah, Ariana and Elijah) and some of us will be doing a mixture of all 3 with a little buggy time thrown in for good measure (Odeya)!
We really appreciate all your support!
