Story
A small group of Yorkshire folk raising funds for Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.
In 2014 a very dear friend was diagnosed with Leukaemia. On top of that a number of family and friends also received the horrendous news that they had been touched by the dreaded C word.
Other than be supportive we felt utterly useless so decided the best way forward was to do all we could to stop people hearing those words. So we set ourselves a couple of challenges, these have now grown and a number of people have volunteered to help us along the way.
Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for the ‘Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma’.
You probably haven’t heard of ‘Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma’. Since 2008 the ‘Friends’ have continued to support a wide range of equipment in the “state of the art”– Institute of Oncology [Bexley Wing] at St. James’ Hospital. Leeds' outstanding contribution was recognised by the recent award of Centre of Excellence status by Bloodwise. We now need to ensure that in creating a world class centre we are able to provide the best possible equipment and facilities, both for patients and in the laboratories, with the added “extras” that have been so important in the past. The medical and nursing team needs our support to help them help their patients. So much has been done and we are on the threshold of an exciting new era with a real prospect of curative treatment for many.
This year has seen the wards gain access to limited free Wi-Fi but the “Friends” are still looking into helping gain reduced TV costs which is incredibly important to patients when faced with a lengthy stay in hospital.
Your money has also helped to buy:
• A 12 lead ECG machine for ambulatory care.
• A veinfinder for ambulatory care.
• A treatment chair for ambulatory care.
• 12 drip stands for Ward 88.
• An electric raise and recline chair for Ward 89.
• A double teaching microscope for the junior
doctors.
• 20 kettles for bedside patient trays on Ward 88.
• 4 electric fans for patients on Ward 88.
Some of these items may seem very small but for a patient to be
able to make their own cup of tea for themselves or their visitors, using a kettle in their room, can make a huge difference and give them back a sense of independence.
Your donations don’t just help people in Leeds. The centre analyses blood samples for the whole of Yorkshire and beyond and many people treated on the wards come from every corner of the Yorkshire region especially for cutting edge bone marrow transplant treatments.
Since 2015 Blood Sweat and Cheers has raised a over £18000 all of which will be spent directly on the wards and we would like to thank everyone one who has donated, ran, walked, baked, climbed, sung, cycled, zumba'd and had a ball.
