Story
We are a group of Black Female Doctors (Medics, Dentists, Surgeons, Scientists and Researches) and mothers who have started this fundraising project in partnership with BYP Network, Dope Black Dads,
Mum's_Prideteam, Dope Black Mums The Motherhood Group and Mums and Tea. The aim is to provide financial assistance to Just for Kids Law, a registered charity which helps the appropriate educational and legal needs of ethnic minority children who have been overpoliced and disproportionately sanctioned by the educational system. In many cases, these children are treated unfairly and as adults, without taking into account their human rights as children.
A recent important case in which Just for Kids Law have been involved, where a child was searched intimately by the police without an appropriate adult, has highlighted the need for further advocacy in this field. No child should be subjected to such traumatic and degrading treatment especially in an educational setting. These treatments can unsurprisingly affect their mental wellbeing and educational needs, robbing them of the future they deserve. Undoubtedly, most of these children are judged through the lenses of adultification, systemic, institutional and racial bias.
Just For Kids Law worked with 785 children and young people last year, helping them stand up for their legitimate rights and entitlements in youth justice, community care, education, immigration and more. 82% were from the Black and other ethnic minority groups.
Sadly, strip searches of minors by the Metropolitan Police are not new to the ethnic minority, especially in the Black Community. Between
2016-2021 the Met strip-searched 9,000 children under the age of 18. In 88% of cases in Hackney, nothing was found and 60% of these children were Black.
We hope change comes soon, however in the meantime, we'd
encourage everyone to donate towards addressing the educational and legal needs of such minors. Considering how stretched and underfunded our educational system is and how expensive the pursuit of legal actions can be, many of these minor's experiences are untold and perpetrators go scot free. Thus, we have collaborated with a charity called Just for Kids Law who address the educational and legal needs of such children so all money raised will go towards supporting their work.
