Story

In memory of our beautiful Bex, her family would like to ask for donations to Kidneys 4 Life. Any money that is raised will go straight to this amazing charity. Helping to give life to other people, just like Bex, who was given more time to live her life to the full because of her kidney Donor.

For those who didn't know Bex, here is the abridged version of an amazing story;

Bex started treatment for type 1 diabetes aged just 6. She was insulin dependant and injected twice a day, managing her condition with bravery, dignity, and lots of support from her Mum, Dad, Brother and Nana.

Bex suffered various complications that come with Diabetes, and in her twenties she haemorrhaged behind her eyes and lost her sight. Through various operations and procedures her sight was partially saved in one eye, but she unfortunately lost sight in her other. She had a false eye and embraced it with humour as she tried to come to grips with her new struggle, and her white stick. You would hardly have known Bex was registered blind, as she coped with it so gracefully.

Not many people, besides her husband and family, knew of the turmoil she was facing privately, because she always wore such a big smile on her face and rarely complained.

Bex had many, many operations through her life. Too many to mention. But the biggest came, when at long last, a kidney donor was found. 2 days before New Years Eve Bex went down for surgery whilst the rest of us held our breath.

A few years on, Bex had led a fairly normal life enjoying time at her favourite place in Nefyn with her husband Steve and their eternal sidekick Ian and other friends. They would go fishing, a pastime that Bex had embraced to the full, walk the beaches and go out on their little boat up and down the Welsh Coast.

Then life threw another challenge her way when she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Back to the hospital for countless round of Chemotherapy, Bex lost her beautiful blond hair. Through Covid, Steve and Bex isolated, unable to see and hug her friends, like Bex would do to absolutely everyone, whether they liked it or not.

As we had all come to expect from Mrs One Percent, as she had become known to us all and the hospital specialist, who she now knew so well that some had become close friends, especially her transplant surgeon Afshin. She beat Cancer, as she had beaten everything else. Our little miracle Bex.

Amazingly her kidney lasted 12 whole years, a long time for any transplanted organ. But this year it began to give up and it was time to get back on dialysis and start the search for another Kidney donor. Her husband was in the process of investigations to be a Donor and was found to be a match. Alongside this she was given the news that her cancer had returned and she had the biggest fight of her life ahead. Unfortunately they didn't get that far. Fluid filled her body faster than it could be drained and eventually reached her heart. Bex went into cardiac arrest The doctors managed to save her and she was put into a coma to give her body time to rest and heal. I don't think any of us believed she wouldn't come back from this. She was Mrs One Percent. She could beat anything.

Then came the news that her Lymphoma was so aggressive that she would be too weak to fight it. The odds were stacked against her. She passed away in the arms of her adoring husband Steve, with her Mum and Brother by her side. She was just 43.

Bex and Steve raised a lot of money for charities through the years, so we are certain that she would love it if we could raise more in tribute to how amazing she was. Selfless as she was brave, if she can give another person a chance of life through a new kidney then maybe some of her suffering and pain can be turned into something good.
