Story
Hello,
Thanks for visiting our page. Nicki’s Smile was set up in memory of Nicki Blake who lost her battle against pancreatic cancer in November 2010, aged 33. She left behind her husband Dan and their three year old son Joshua.
Solly is Joshua's friend and classmate... He is running 1K alongside Joshua (both now 7) so that he can make as much money for and raise as much awareness about Pancreatic Cancer as possible.
Twenty months earlier Nicki was diagnosed with an advanced form of neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer. The cancer was diagnosed too late and was inoperable.
Just over a year before she was diagnosed, Nicki complained of such severe back and abdominal pain that she went to A&E. Unfortunately potential warning signs for cancer growth in the pancreas were not picked up and she was sent home with anti-inflammatory medication.
With improved awareness of how to identify symptoms, doctors could have requested an ultrasound/abdominal CT. This would almost certainly have shown a tumour in the head of her pancreas that would have more than likely been suitable for surgery. Nicki could still be alive today.
The facts about pancreatic cancer in the UK
5th – most common cause of cancer deaths8,500 – people diagnosed with and die from pancreatic cancer every year
40 years – without improvement of survival statistics
1% – of overall cancer research funding
The survival statistics won't change without an increase in funding for research
Vision and Aim
Our Vision is to be a catalyst for improving life expectancy and survival rates for patients with pancreatic cancer. Our Aim is to make this a reality by funding research and early diagnosis initiatives into pancreatic cancer.
If Nicki’s Smile makes a difference to even one person, then Nicki's death would not have been in vain.
Thank you for your support
