These two little sisters (Ruby, 5 Elsie, 4) are always receiving comments about their lovely thick locks of hair. They take a great delight in choosing bows and pretty headbands to wear.
Playing with Elsie's hair one day I said, "Your hair is perfect, lots of little girls would love to have hair like yours". Elsie, the chatty 4 year old that always has an answer for everything, "Everyone has their own hair, silly Mummy!" That's when deeper conversation about the sick children that have lost their hair through cancer treatment started. I explained to her that many girls donate their hair to the Little Princess Trust - "What's
that?". Sat on my lap we found their website on the computer. She was
amazed that her hair could be made into a wig for another child to wear,
brush and plait.
That was it, she was fixed onto the idea, desperate to pick Ruby up
from school so she could tell her about what she was going to do. I felt
so proud of Elsie listening to her answering all of Ruby's questions. She knew exactly what she was going to do and why. It didn't take long
before they came running into the kitchen where I was, "I want to give
my hair to the poorly children too" Ruby shouted. And that was that, I had two very enthusiastic little girls jumping around and hugging, bursting with joy about what they had agreed to do. For the next 3 hours that was all we spoke about. I never thought I would be talking about cancer to them anytime yet, they didn't even know real wigs existed. They only knew of the Disney princess wig that came with their Ariel costume. I am excessively proud of my daughters for doing this as I know how much they adore their long hair.
Ruby
and Elsie have little understanding about the value of money and they
would be delighted to raise a couple of pounds for the Little Princess
Trust. With this being the girls'
idea we don't have a target or a goal for the amount they can raise
together. It costs the charity £350 to provide a sick child with 1 wig.
So please give what you can. I would love to tell them when they are older that they raised a considerable amount of money for the Little Princess Trust as well as donating their beloved hair.
