What we’re doing:
Nic and B are running 13.1 miles through the Royal Parks on Sunday 7 of October to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, a charity very close to Bethan’s heart.
Why we’re doing it:
As you will all know, this is a huge personal challenge for both of us. As people who have spent most of our lives doing no exercise, 13 miles is starting to look like a hell of a long way to run.
Why this charity:
For the month of June 1994, my dad was very poorly and needed 24 hour care, but wasn't very aware of what was going on. To save him the added stress of being in hospital, in unfamiliar surroundings, my mum was with him at home pretty much all of the time.
As he was wandering, mentally and physically, any time of day or night, she wasn't able to get any sleep - especially for the last couple of weeks.
So, for the last few nights, a Marie Curie nurse would come in for the night and stay with him, keeping a watchful eye on him and giving him medication and sedation when he needed it. This gave my mum a much needed chance for a couple of hours sleep here and there.
The Marie Curie nurses were always gentle, helpful and reassuring. One was there when he died and of course not only knew exactly what to do, but got on and did it, so that when we saw him, he was peaceful.
They do all this without charge, fuss or drama.
