Story
Bert is a former football goalkeeper who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers and England.
Bert won the FA Cup with Wolves in 1949 and followed-up this achievement with a League Championship medal in 1954. He played 24 times for England between 1949 and 1955, including the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
Bert's wife, Evelyn, died with dementia in 2002 and as he was given so much help from the Alzheimer's Society Shrewsbury he decided to dedicate his future life to raising funds for the Society.
'Alzheimer's is something that I have experienced at first hand with my wife and there are currently 750,000 people in the UK with dementia. Dementia can happen to anyone and currently there is no cure. But with the right support, people can live well with dementia.'
He said if he set himself a target then he would achieve it and at the grand old age of 82 he set out to raise £100,000!
In May 2010 he was awarded his MBE for services to soccer and for his charity fund raising, two months later the Society said Bert had passed his original target of £100,000 so at the ripe old age of 90 Bert upped his target to £150,000!
In June 2013 passed the £150,000.00 mark so thank you to all those that supported him.
