Story
The Light project Peterborough is a charity that are focused
on supporting the homeless in Peterborough.
They offer advice and support to rough sleepers and provide their guests with support from housing officers, GP’s, drug and alcohol specialists and many other professionals right at the heart of the city in their day centre the Garden House. Their aim is to ensure that everyone is treated as an individual, that they are supported to fulfil their potential.
They have continued their services right through the pandemic and continue to see over one new person per day presenting as having
nowhere to live. Leading the work through the pandemic on the governments ‘Everyone In’ initiative they supported 339 people to move off the streets with 410 days support with staff, volunteers and partners to keep everyone safe and feeling loved. This led to them setting up a team of community support workers and a telephone support project helped by some amazing volunteers.
This winter communal night shelters cannot run again but they will be piloting accommodation units across the city to ensure that in the long term there is better provision to help people find homes and feel part of the community. 2023 will be a busy, but exciting year as the charity is investigating how is continues to serve the city. They will be taking over the work of Street Pastors to help people in trouble on an evening out, are well on the way to leading the Big Issue back into Peterborough to help people escape from begging and have support to provide a mobile health hub to enhance the life chances of those in need.
