Story
Too many children are not receiving a quality education, creating a cycle of disadvantage which is hard to break. Educate a Child International (EACI), a UK-based charity, is seeking to change this. By working together, we can help to achieve a lasting impact which benefits children, communities and systems across the world.
Around the world, 258 million children were deprived of school even before Covid-19 struck – including a staggering 59 million primary-aged children. These out-of-school children are amongst the most in need, facing multiple and overlapping barriers. Children – and especially girls – who are poor, displaced or disabled are far less likely to enrol and stay in school. This affects their health and what they can earn – and the cycle is set to be repeated with their own children.
How you can help
EACI provides access to quality education to children who are denied this due to poverty, conflict, disaster, disability and discrimination.
Your donations help to support our vital work in countries including India, Zambia and Ethiopia. Together with Education Above All Foundation and carefully selected in-country partners, we deliver large-scale education projects which have helped more than 10 million children to access a quality education:
- Training of volunteers, to help encourage communities and families to send their children to school
- Training of teachers and schools, to improve the quality of the school curriculum
- Water and sanitation facilities within schools, so that children can learn safely
- Building new schools
- Books and learning materials for students.
Monica, a girl living in rural India, was out-of-school when a co-ordinator from the Educate Girls project we support knocked on her door. With encouragement from the project team, Monica enrolled in school and is now enjoying her education, especially maths. She says, “When my mother and grandmother go to the market, I am taken along because I can count money for them. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher.”
