Peak District Mighty Hike 2023 - half marathon · 23 July 2023 ·
Thank you to everyone who has donated and for all your support. The hike was amazing fun and we are very proud of the amount of money raised!
Our Story
2020 was a year to forget for most people. For us it was the year we learned that our Dad had been diagnosed with Glioblastoma. A stage 4 brain cancer that he would lose his battle to, later that same year.
This horrific disease took away all the attributes that most of us take for granted. Speech, language, mobility, independence in just 10 short months. For our Dad, someone who was otherwise fit and healthy, this all happened to him during the first covid lockdown where he had to shield for his own safety. It was a terrifying experience for him and all the family.
There was, however, one thing that Dad held on to from the moment we found out about the diagnosis, right up to his final moments… his smile. Despite all the unfortunate sequence of events that took away this amazing person, just as he was about to retire, he found a way to smile through it all. Never wishing to be a burden on anyone else and always playing down the cruelty of what was happening to him.
Macmillan helped me and my sister through the darkest moments, ensuring that we had the support and knowledge to provide Dad with his only wish, to die at home.
This isn’t a 200 mile ultra-marathon through the desert. It’s just a hike around a beautiful area of the world that dad called home. But if it helps us to raise much needed funds to aid further research into brain tumours and to help Macmillan to continue their amazing work, then it’s the very least we can do.
Thanks for supporting our fundraising.
Much love, Simon and Francesca X
