Story

First thing’s first: I am not a cyclist by any stretch of the imagination. 2 weeks ago I got on a bike for the first time in 5 years. But Trekstock have set up an event where you can do something every day for 34 days to raise money for them as a charity; and me being me, doing something that I felt would be “comfortable” for a relatively healthy 29-year old just didn’t sit right.

However... the distance between Land’s End and John o’Groats is 874 miles. Over 34 days, this means cycling 25.7 miles a day, nearly equivalent to a marathon. I obviously can’t do the ride “properly” right now, but I can go out once a day, and I have a turbo trainer to ride in my garage. But I have to fit this in around work, and my running, so this is going to be interesting.

Most of you know my story, but for those who don’t I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 19, and I felt quite alone when it came to people who were in my shoes, who I could relate to. Trekstock weren’t around then; but I wish they were. They hold sessions, organise activities, and do meet-ups to allow young people with cancer the chance to make friends, and feel loved and welcomed at a crucial time in their lives. Now, in this current climate, their work is all the more important as people cannot even meet up, so Trekstock do online meet-ups and try to bring a sense of normality to these young people’s’ lives. Please help by sponsoring me to do something that may ruin cycling for me forever, but for a fabulous cause!

34 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. Trekstock gets them moving physically and socially, through and beyond cancer. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed life for everyone, but young adults living through and beyond cancer are among the hardest hit. Most are at increased risk and strictly self-isolating for the next twelve weeks. They may also be anxious about their treatment plans and feeling more alone than ever. That's why our services are more vital than ever.Every year in the UK over 12,500 young adults aged in their 20s and 30s are diagnosed with cancer. During this time that statistic has not changed. The demand for our services has only increased and your donation will ensure young adults are supported during this crisis. Trekstock is determined to be there for our community during this crisis - but we can't do it without your support.
