Raleigh is a registered charity that works with young people from all backgrounds and nationalities, including those disadvantaged or ‘at risk’, to enable them to make a positive contribution and enhance their personal and social development. Raleigh achieve this by engaging young people in worthwhile community, environmental and adventure projects that meet the needs of people living in developing countries.

Raleigh maintains a permanent presence in the host countries, thereby building long-term relationships with partners who have a genuine need, so all Raleigh expeditions make a positive contribution to the host country. Through these partnerships Raleigh works in national parks and other areas that haven't been opened to tourists.

Tanzania is in East Africa and is one of the poorest countries in the world. About 75% of Tanzanians live in rural households where access to safe water and sanitation is rare. Raleigh International works closely with communities to provide knowledge about sanitation and safe water as well as ways in which they can improve their own wellbeing. This sometimes includes projects to manage human and animal conflict thus reducing poaching from farms. Other projects involve building toilets for schools, and providing community facilities such as early childhood development centres to increase health and community engagement.

My fundraising for Raleigh will help support this important work and in June 2016 I will spend 3 months in Tanzania as a volunteer manager on these projects & helping Raleigh Venturers (18-25 year olds) to experience this wonderful country and its environment and learn more about themselves.

My fundraising activities will include running, cycling and walking 6,614 miles – the equivalent of the land distance from London to Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. I started this on 1 March 2015 and will complete by 31 May 2016! Along the way I will take part in various races, sportives and walking adventures. There will also be other fundraising opportunities such as cake sales and a quiz night, other suggestions welcome. Please support my endeavours and this great cause.
